I’m a bit concerned at the moment that it won’t have enough content to go the distance long term, with only two enemy factions (so far as we know), procedurally generated levels that can feel a bit one-note, and pelo real live-service roadmap at launch, but with such a strong, effortlessly fun foundation, it’s definitely off to good start. With all the over-the-top gore and patriotic pageantry of Starship Troopers, Helldivers 2 is the kind of wonderfully silly shooter that me and my friends could easily lose many Friday nights to.

Using the big guns, like orbital strikes and bombing runs, feels perfect for conserving your ammunition and grenades, but those can easily run dry before the artillery cooldowns are back. On top of their cooldowns, the heavy artillery or support of the Stratagems have to be activated using a wrist-mounted computer that requires fighting game-like button combinations to call down anything from extra ammo to a nuclear warhead.

Plus, some elements of the post-processing, like the screen-space reflections, didn't give very much of an Unreal impression to me. It turns out that the game is using a modified version of the discontinued Autodesk Stingray game engine, which makes more sense. A variant of this engine powered the excellent Warhammer 40K: Darktide, and while Helldivers 2 isn't quite as striking, I think the game looks strong overall. But Environmental critiques are fine but perhaps miss the point: Helldivers 2 is an action-packed title, and much of your time is spent engaging with the game's insect and robotic foes. These firefights can look pretty extraordinary, especially when all four players are tightly clustered, trying to defend an objective. The key here is how enemies react when shot: each bullet strike spawns little bits of blood or smoke, alongside chunks of viscera or mechanical bits. It makes the simple act of firing at enemies satisfying.

Instead of putting a group of players onto a dedicated server, the matchmaker simply connects you to another player's public lobby as they're preparing for a mission that matches your chosen planet and difficulty.

Helldivers 2 is a sci-fi third-person co-op PvE shooter published by PlayStation Studios and developed by Arrowhead Game Studios. In it, players are put into the shoes of a "Helldiver" — a heavily armed and armored space marine that fights to defend humanity and "Super Earth" from extra-terrestrial threats such as alien bugs called Terminids or a race of technologically advanced and militaristic robots called the Automatons.

Turrets can easily take down a team when they least expect it. Go prone to avoid getting shot by turrets.

Each member of your squad can play according to their own style: some of you will charge into the fight, others will call down a sniper rifle stratagem and maintain a safe distance while picking off the enemies.

It is a bit on the difficult side if you’re not playing with at least a friend, but I highly recommend a full group of 4 for the best experience. There are a good few types of missions, and some of them are very challenging as a solo player. If you don’t mind a good Helldivers 2 Gameplay challenge, however, or have friends you can party up with, Helldivers 2 is a fantastic time and I sincerely believe you will enjoy yourself.
